2013 Science Fairs Provincial Awards
The British Columbia Provincial Awards Program is available to all participants of the British Columbia Regional Science Fairs which are currently affiliated with Youth Science Canada. Criteria for awards are broad to enable as many students as possible to participate.
Winners and nominees for Provincial Awards are not necessarily Canada-Wide Science Fair participants or Gold Medal winners at their Regional Science Fairs. Submissions may be one or two-person projects. Awards are shared except where noted.
Awards listed below are available at each Regional Science Fair. Judges will follow the criteria as set out above. Awards will be announced and presented at each Regional Science Fair.
Al Appleton Worksafe Award (Worksafe BC – Worker’s Compensation Board of British Columbia) • $100
To be awarded at each British Columbia Regional Science Fair to the best project demonstrating the principles of occupational hygiene. The student(s) must have consulted with people in the community or region about the content of their project. The student(s) must show creativity, innovation and enthusiasm in the display of the project.
BC Agriculture in the Classroom Award • $100
To be awarded to an outstanding project that shows the practical application of scientific principles to agriculture. Students from Grades 5 to 12 are eligible for the award.
BC Hydro for Generations Award • $100, Perpetual Trophy, BC Hydro for Generations Award Winner Certificate
To be awarded to a student(s) in Grades 4 to 12 who creates a project which creatively demonstrates electrical conservation and its environmental, social and economical impacts.
BC Nature Award (Federation of BC Naturalists) • $75
To be awarded at each British Columbia Regional Science Fair to the best natural history project done by a student(s) in Grades 7 to 12. This includes studies of any aspect of natural history, conservation of natural habitats, or the conservation of natural species.
BCIC Student/Teacher Recognition Award • $100 (Student), $100 (Teacher)
To be awarded to a student(s) who has developed a science and technology innovation with the potential to benefit British Columbia. This joint teacher/student award is intended to recognize the efforts of the winning student(s) and the supporting teacher. Preference is given to a project selected for CWSF 2013.
BCIC Young Scientist Award • Merchandise, Perpetual Trophy
To be awarded to a junior or intermediate student(s) who has shown initiative and curiosity in the selection of a topic and/ or approach to the research or design or presentation of the project. The student must have consulted with people in the community or region about the content of the project. The student must show creativity, innovation and enthusiasm in the display of the project.
BCIC Young Innovator Scholarship • Minimum $2,000
To be awarded to a Grade 11 or 12 student(s) who has developed a science and technology innovation with the potential to benefit British Columbia. The winner(s) must be selected for CWSF 2013 and to receive the award, he/she must enrol full-time upon graduation in a science and technology program in a British Columbia post-secondary institution.
A student is eligible to receive only one BCIC Young Innovator Scholarship per academic year.
BC Science Teachers’ Award • $100
To be awarded to a student(s) from grades 7 or 8 for an experimental project in any category that has clearly presented a hypothesis and independent, controlled variables.
Genome British Columbia Award • 2 x $100
To be awarded to two projects dealing with a topic of genomic interest. Students in all grades are eligible for this award.
Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon Award • Recognition Plaque
To be awarded to an outstanding cardiovascular or cerebrovascular related project.
Michael Crooks Physics Prize (British Columbia Association of Physics Teachers) • $75
To be awarded to a student(s) in Grades 6 to 12 who has done an outstanding physics-related project.
SCWIST Award (Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology) • $100, SCWIST Award Winner Certificate
To be given to young women in Grades 8 to 10 categories whose project shows the greatest curiosity, ingenuity and innovation in design. The award is intended to encourage the student’s interest in science. A student may not receive this award more than once.
Awards listed below are available at specific Regional Science Fairs. Judges will follow the criteria as set out below. Awards will be announced and presented at the Regional Science Fair.
Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC Award • Cash Award (as determined by each local Chapter), Perpetual Regional Trophy
To be awarded to outstanding engineering projects. Projects eligible for this award include those in the fields of chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial and mechanical engineering as well as systems design.
BC Greenhouse Growers’ Association Award (A partner of BC Agriculture in the Classroom) • $75
To be awarded to an outstanding project that demonstrates the creative use of advanced science and technology to enhance vegetable plant productivity and quality. Projects eligible for this award include those in the area of biological pest control, irrigation, nutrition, growing media, climate control and mechanics. Available to Fraser Valley, Greater Vancouver and South Fraser Regional Science Fairs.
DAWEG Award (Division for Advancement of Women in Engineering and Geoscience) • $50
To be awarded to a student who effectively and enthusiastically communicates an original solution to an engineering or hard science problem/project by applying their knowledge of science and math. Available in Greater Vancouver, Fraser Valley, South Fraser and Vancouver Island Regional Science Fairs.
To be eligible for awards listed below, projects must be nominated. Each Regional Science Fair Judging Committee will select and nominate deserving projects from those entries submitted to the fair. The award winner(s) will be required to submit proof of enrolment at a post secondary institution. Please refer to nomination forms for specific requirements. BC Hydro Scholarship • $2,000
To be awarded to a grade 12 student with good academic standing, noteworthy achievements including participation in school or community activities. The award winner will be required to submit proof of enrolment at a postsecondary institution in Canada.
Genome British Columbia Scholarship • $1,000
To be awarded to a senior student who has developed a science and technology project focused on areas of strategic importance such as human health, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, bioenergy, mining, and the environment. Awarded to a student pursuing a science degree in British Columbia. The award winner will be required to submit proof of enrolment at a postsecondary institution in BC.
TRCR Award (Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation) • $500 Post-Secondary Education Scholarship
To be awarded to an outstanding project done by a Grade 11 or 12 student(s) dealing with reclamation or environmental protection. Preference will be given to mining-related projects. The award winner(s) will be required to submit proof of enrolment at a postsecondary institution.
W.E. Coates Award (Canadian Land Reclamation Association, BC Chapter) • $200
To be awarded to an outstanding junior or intermediate project related to land, aquatic or marine environment reclamation and/or rehabilitation.
The recipients of the awards listed below will be selected from the British Columbia students’ projects that participate in the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). Nomination forms need not be submitted. All students attending the CWSF are automatically eligible.
Association of Professional Biologists Award • $100, Newsletter Subscription
To be awarded to the British Columbia student(s) who achieves the highest standing at the Canada-Wide Science Fair with a project of a biological nature.
Ministry of Transportation Award • $100 (Junior); $100 (Intermediate); $1,000 Post-Secondary Education Scholarship (Senior)
To be awarded to an outstanding project in each age category that shows the practical application of scientific principles to identifying and addressing a transportation-related issue.
MIT Alumni of BC Award (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) • $100
To be awarded to a project that demonstrates informed curiosity, exploration, and discovery as well as the practical potential for real world application and entrepreneurship.
Vancouver RASC Martha Pearse Award (Royal Astronomical Society Vancouver Centre) • $500
To be awarded to the best astronomy or physics project that demonstrates creativity, innovation and contributes to a greater public understanding of science
