REGISTRATION IS WELL UNDER WAY AS THE
PMC-SIERRA SCIENCE FAIR FUN RUN GETS CLOSER!
Registration for the seventh annual PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run is well under way! It's easy to participate in the run, just go to the Fun Run's website at http://sciencefairs.ca/fun_run_2006 for all the details.
In this issue of Science In Motion, you'll read about a special program that allows students to learn all about science while having fun at Playland, hear how science fairs are making their way into the legislature and see what's in store for the 2006 Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF).
Also in this issue:
Our feature interview with April Green, CWSF Alumni, will give a new perspective on how science fairs can influence participants well into their adult lives. We'll also show you some cool science experiments that you can do right at home and fill you in on fun science related events that are happening in your community.

PMC-Sierra Science Fair "Mini Run"
Sunday, May 28, 2006
Bring out your youngsters and have a blast while raising funds for Science Fairs!
On Sunday, May 28th, the TELUS World of Science will be the site of the seventh annual PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run. The Fun Run is a timed 5km waterfront course that starts and finishes at TELUS World
of Science, looping through Charleson Park.
The 'Mini Run' for children takes place 5 minutes after the main 5 kilometer run, which begins at 9:00am. The 1 kilometer 'Mini Fun Run' goes through Creekside Park and ends with the children running through a bouquet of balloons!
There is a $5 entry fee for children participating, which includes entry to TELUS World of Science. An optional race T-shirt (size 6X) can be purchased for mini run participants for $8. Timing chips are not required for the mini run.
So come out to the Run on Sunday, May 28th and enjoy a day of science, fitness, and fun!
*All Mini Fun Run participants must have an accompanying adult run with them.

Let's go to Playland...
All in the name of Science!
Playland presents Amusement Park Science and Physics - a unique opportunity to spend the day at Playland and learn about the science behind amusement park rides in an exciting and relevant way. Since 1989, over 100,000 students from BC have experienced the Science of Fun and Science & Physics Days at Playland. Students can learn about the acceleration on the Roller Coaster or G-force on the Hellevator. Playland provides a curriculum guide with grade appropriate experiments developed by Jim Wiese (author of Amusement Park Science) and hosted by Playland.

Science Fairs Make Their Way Into Legislature
Back in 2002, the month of March was officially proclaimed 'Youth Science Month' by the Province of British Columbia. On March 7th of this year, Science Fairs made their way into legislature discussion when Shane Simpson, MLA, Vancouver Hastings reflected on his experience at the Vancouver District Science Fair. Below is the transcript of Mr. Simpson's reflections.
"I'm pleased to speak today about a wonderful event I attended on March 4 in Vancouver, an event that I'm sure the member for Vancouver-Burrard, who also attended, would share my enthusiasm for. The Vancouver District Science Fair, which was held at Vancouver Tech Secondary School, brought together over 400 grade seven to 12 students from across the district to present some 200 science projects..."

2006 Canada-Wide Science Fair Update!
The 2006 Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) will be taking place in Saguenay Quebec this year. Students from all over Canada participate in the Fair, which takes place from May 12 to May 22. The goal of CWSF is to present the top national science projects and to foster an environment of sharing knowledge about science with each other and the public.
