Eighth Annual PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run Raises $50,000 For B.C. Science Fair Students

We did it! On Sunday, May 27, 2007, the PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run raised $50,000 and attracted over 1300 runners, making this year's run the most successful year to date. Since the Fun Run began in 2000, it has raised over $310,000 for The Dr. Michael Smith Science Fair Endowment in support of Science Fair programs across B.C. Thank you to everyone who came out on the blustery Sunday morning to show their support of B.C. Science Fairs.

Try This At Home - Invisible-Visible Fingerprints

Courtesty of Science World

Here's what you will need:

  • soft powder brush
  • baby powder
  • a hard, smooth shiny surface
  • your hair and your fingers
  • piece of black cardboard

What to do:

  1. Pour a small amount of baby powder into a small dish.
  2. Run your fingers through your hair.
  3. Place one of your fingers on a hard, smooth shiny object.
  4. Put a small amount of baby powder on the powder brush, blow on it gently, and run the brush softly over the fingerprinted spot.
  5. Take a piece of tape and place it on top of the print. Rub it well so the print sticks to the tape.
  6. Peel off the tape, and stick it to the black cardboard. Now you can see your fingerprint!

Get a family member to do the activity, then compare your fingerprints. Do they have the same type of fingerprints as you?

Science World Introduces New Science Fair Program

Science World is pleased to introduce our new Science Fair Program which consists of a resource guide and workshop. Our goal is to support those who wish to organize science fair projects or coordinate non-competitive science fairs for K-7 students. The guide is downloadable and science-fair-enthusiasts are encouraged to read, distribute and modify in whatever way works for their community. The workshop is a combination of presentation, discussion, demonstration, hands-on activities and sharing. It is designed for adults: teachers, administrators, sponsors, parents - the idea is to build a 'committee' of science fair supporters within a given school or community.
