BC Students Receive Top Honours at Taiwan International Science Fair for Fifth Consecutive Year

February | 2019
Two British Columbia students are returning from an exciting week at the Taiwan international Science Fair in Taipei, Taiwan with top honours.

Nicolas Fedrigo, a Grade 12 student from Claremont Secondary in Victoria, was awarded first place in the Engineering category for this project titled “Improving Spinal Fusions: Redesigning the Pedicle Probe to Prevent Vertebral Breaches”.  Mr Fedrigo’s innovation, which helps to prevent complication during spinal fusion surgery, also received top awards at the 2018 Canada-Wide Science Fair and the European Union Contest for Young Scientists.

Natasha Burgert, a Grade 12 student from Semiahmoo Secondary in Surrey, award-winning project, “The Solar EV: Applying High Efficiency Solar Modules in Sustainable Transport”, received third place in the Environmental Engineering category. Ms. Burgert designed, built and tested this solar vehicle to operate continuously during sunny, daylight hours.

“This marks the fifth consecutive year that both BC students participating in the Taiwan International Science Fair have returned home with medals” said Madeleine Guenette, Director of Operations of the Science Fair Foundation of BC. “We are so pleased to support incredible students like Natasha and Nicolas and believe their recent success speaks to the strength of the BC Science Fair Program.”

In the coming months, two thousand finalists from classroom and community fairs throughout BC will be selected to attend the 13 Regional Science Fairs to compete for awards, scholarship and the chance to join Team BC at the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Over 1,500 STEAM educators and professionals from across the province will volunteer as mentors, judges, organizers and chaperones allowing BC’s youth to gain the skills and confident to compete on national and international stages.
