An Introduction to Fundraising

This Speaker Session is an Introduction to Fundraising and our speakers are Alyssa Brownsmith and Jennifer Halinda. Alyssa is our Strategic Partnership Manager. She has over fifteen years of experience working with STEM partners and executing partnerships and events. And Jennifer is our Partnership Manager with a focus on grants and corporate sponsorship. She has over nine years of experience raising funds for non-profits and forming long-term partnerships.

In this session, you'll hear about some of the myths of fundraising, strategies when approaching local organizations for partnerships, and tips for writing grants.

Community Outreach

This Speaker Session is about Community Outreach with Anne-Marie Simard. Anne-Marie is a high school science teacher, is a former science fair participant, was a member of the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair committee and the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair committee, and has volunteered with Science Fair Foundation BC in developing student workshops and the two regional fairs we hosted last year.

In this session, you'll hear about how science fairs match the current BC science curriculum and different ways to introduce and encourage teachers to bring science fairs into the classroom.

Marketing for Science Fairs

In this Speaker Session, Simran Banwait talks about some of the fundamental goals and best practices around social media marketing and PR. Simran is the Social Media Manager with JamPR. He specializes in digital marketing, particularly through the various social media platforms, and helps get people and businesses noticed through social media best practices, content creation and engagement.

In this session, you'll hear about the different social media platforms, their different purposes and audiences, and what content to post, and how often, to best promote your science fair.

Ethics in Science Fairs

Roswitha (Rossi) Marx joins us in this Speaker Session to discuss ethics in science fairs. Rossi is Senior Laboratory Instructor at the University of Victoria, where she provides mentorship and hands-on learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. She has also been the chair of the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair since 2004, and is involved with Science Venture and Let's Talk Science, among other things.

In this session, Rossi talks about the fundamentals and importance of ethics in science fairs, which projects need ethics approval, reviews examples of ethics forms and how to fill them out, and provides several examples from her own experience of projects that needed ethics approval.

Judging Part 1: Rubrics

Our speaker for this session is Gerry Gourlay, the Teaching Assistant Coordinator at the University of Victoria. Gerry is also the Coordinator for the Canadian Association of Girls in Science, the Victoria Chapter, has served as Chief Judge for the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair, and played a huge role with Science Fair Foundation BC getting the judging process set up for both the 2022 West Kootenay Regional Science Fair and Central Interior Science Exhibition.

For this Speaker Session, Gerry discusses what goes into the creation and development of a judging rubric, transferring your rubric into a scoresheet for judges, and what to do after your judges have submitted their scores.
