August 13, 2024, Vancouver, BC — The Science Fair Foundation BC is excited to announce that registration is now open for the sixth annual Youth Innovation Showcase, a virtual STEM competition. Youth across BC and Yukon can enter their science projects that aim to solve a challenge for a chance to win $5,000.
“We are excited to bring back the Youth Innovation Showcase for its sixth year,” said Sarah Prade, Executive Director of the Science Fair Foundation BC. “The talent showcased last year was remarkable, and we are eager to see the fresh perspectives and skills that the youth across the region will bring to the forefront this year.”
The showcase has sponsorship and judging support from prominent organizations in BC’s tech community, as well as returning alumni with an all-new evaluation criteria.
“Helping to drive the curiosity and critical thinking of today’s youth will lead to innovation and more impactful solutions to our greatest challenges in the future,” says Sally Greenwood, Genome BC, VP Communications and Societal Engagement. “Genome BC is proud to support the work of the Science Fair Foundation BC and its Youth Innovation Showcase – this kind of opportunity is critical to shaping the problem solvers of the future.”
Eligible participants must be between 12 and 19 years old as of August 12th, 2024 and live in British Columbia or the Yukon. Individuals and teams (2 people maximum) are invited to participate and will be divided into one of two age categories: 12 to 15 years old, and 16 to 19 years old. The two age categories will be evaluated separately; there is one $5,000 grand prize for each age category.
This year will also introduce the YIS Visionary Award, recognizing youth who can share their entrepreneurial interest and communicate effectively in their presentation materials, including a one-page report and pitch video during the competition. Recipients of this award will be youth who are strong visionaries of the future needs of their family, community, or society, and communicate how their innovation is supporting those needs.
