The West Kootenay Regional Science Fair is currently looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to help us organize our annual youth STEM event taking place in April, 2023. The purpose of the West Kootenay Regional Science Fair is to celebrate the curiosity and accomplishments of youth in science and give them an opportunity to share their passion for STEM with others.

Please see below for a list of roles needed for this year. A successful Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector) may be required for some positions.

Priority: High

Description:
The chair is the leader of the committee. You will assign tasks to members of your committee, make sure they have what they need to complete that task, and ensure it's completed on time. Along with general oversight of the West Kootenay Regional Science Fair, you'll also be responsible for setting the annual budget and creatinga  timeline for planning.

Description:
Project judging is the highlight of any science fair and the most important part for most students. As Head Judge, you'll develop the scoring rubric, recruit and train your team of volunteer judges, schedule and oversee the interview process, and assist in assigning awards to top projects. Previous experience as a science fair judge is an asset; additional resources are available to support this role.

Description:
The official launch of the science fair season begins with student registration. As our Registrar, database management and logistics are your jam. You'll create and administer the online registration system for both students and judges, communicate registration information to different members of the committee, and field general questions, all with a keep appreciation for privacy.

Description:
Ethics are often an overlooked aspect of science fairs but critical to the safety and eligibility of student projects. Much of your role as the Ethics Coordinator will be educating students, parents and teachers about the importance of proper ethics and safety approval through developing and distributing the ethics approval forms, reviewing ethics applications from students, and reviewing and contacting student projects that may have missed or forgotten to submit their ethics forms.

Description:
As a registered non-profit organization, we have certain filing and reporting obligations under the BC Societies Act. Our Secretary/Treasurer will be responsible for our annual filings, recording meeting minutes and membership statuses, and assisting the chair with setting a budget and recording expenses.

Description:
The West Kootenay Regional Science Fair relies on the generosity of individuals, groups, and businesses in our community to make our event possible. Our Fundraising Coordinator is instrumental in developing those relationships and harnessing the goodwill of our supporters through general awareness campaigns, sponsorship agreements, writing grants, and community fundraising events.

Description:
A year's worth of planning goes into a one-day event where many moving parts come together. Having a team of enthusiastic volunteers to help with prep, day-of activities, and take-down makes a world of difference. As the Volunteer Manager, your job will be to determine how many roles and volunteers we'll need for the fair, and then recruit, train and organize them on the day of the fair.

Description:
Ours is a community-based event and we're always looking to grow our community. As our Community Outreach campaigner, you'll increase participation by going to schools and telling students and teachers about our fair; you'll recruit volunteers by talking to people in the community about ways they can help; and you'll increase our fundraising by talking to local businesses to see if they can help.

Description:
One of the goals of the West Kootenay Regional Science Fair is to recognize the accomplishments of our students. As our Marketing/Social Media Coordinator, you'll be a big part of that. Along with using our website and social platforms to promote our event and our students, you'll also coordinate with other members of the committee to make sure important dates, deadlines and events are being communicated to our audience and the community. Graphic design skills and experience is an asset for this role.

Description:
At the end of the West Kootenay Regional Science Fair, top projects and outstanding students are recognized for their hard work and accomplishments. As the Awards Coordinator, you'll liaise with the Head Judge and other members of your committee to assign awards and prizes to participants based on judge scores and award criteria. You'll also ensure all trophies, plaques, ribbons and certificates are prepared, and plan and coordinate the awards ceremony at the end of the fair when the awards are presented.

Description:
The West Kootenay Regional Science Fair is a celebration of youth accomplishments and curiosity in science. As the Activities Coordinator, your role is to dream, plan and implement different ways to make our event fun for participants, parents and volunteers. This could be a science show, a scavenger hunt, or anything that makes people want to come back again next year (and falls within our budget!).
