Science Fair Foundation BC is honored to facilitate the Julia Lane Scholarship once again, and there are some exciting changes in eligibility to expand on accessibility for students in BC and the Yukon.
The Julia Lane Scholarship is an annual $3,000 bursary to be awarded to a Grade 11 or 12 student with a passion for science and community. Preference is given to female candidates with projects relating to Geology or Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Unlike previous years, for 2025 applicants for the scholarship may now nominate themselves instead of being selected by your regional science fair committee!
We have also expanded the reference letter parameters to include relevant mentors outside of traditional educators. We hope that this will encourage homeschoolers, newcomers, and other marginalized students to apply. For many, this may be completed by an Elder, church or community leader, coach, librarian, and more. The reference letter is also no longer required but strongly encouraged to paint a more complete picture of the applicant and their potential.
We are also happy to inform all applicants in grade 11 that they can defer the scholarship. This means that the winner may postpone the funds being issued to the post-secondary institution of their choice until their grade 12 year.
Please note that you must have a science project currently enrolled in a Regional Science Fair within BC or the Yukon to qualify.
If you are unsure about the viability of your reference letter, or if you have any other questions or concerns about your application, we would love to hear from you at info@sciencefairs.ca with the subject line “2025 Julia Lane Scholarship Inquiry”.
